Juncker speech. FCEI’s President Negro: Europe finally gives a sign

"We hope that the Italian Government will do its part in terms of reception and integration". "The Italian evangelical churches make available their experience gained over the years of ‘humanitarian corridors’”

Rome, September 14, 2018 (NEV / CS32) – “Europe finally gives a sign and affirms what has been obvious for years, that is, the issue of Mediterranean migration is a full-fledged Community theme, and not just a problem of some most exposed countries”. This was what Luca Maria Negro, president of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy (FCEI), said after the speech of the EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on the State of the Union at the Plenary  of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Juncker, among other things, spoke about the need to “open legal immigration routes to Europe”.
“We therefore hope that the Italian Government will support this approach by doing first its part in terms of reception and integration, opposing with every means the individualist and sovereign pressures that are emerging in some EU countries”, Negro continued.
“For their part, the Italian evangelical churches will continue, as they have always done in recent years, to collaborate with churches and ecclesial movements, civil society organizations and institutions in the framework of sustainable humanitarian policies that guarantee safe and legal routes for access to migrants and refugees. The experience gained over the years of “humanitarian corridors” is a valuable fund that we make available to promote these policies”, Negro concluded.
