FCEI. Dismay for the stumbling stones theft

Those stones represent the “victims of the dissolution of law, of the triumph of arbitrariness and hatred, of the demonization of differences”

Rome (NEV / CS47), December 14, 2018 – The Council of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy (FCEI) expressed, in a press release of December 10th, dismay for the theft, in a very central street of the Capital, of 20 stumbling stones:

“They are called stumbling stones because one has to stumble on them not only with the feet, but with brain and heart. The names on which one stumbles are those of the victims of the dissolution of law, of the triumph of arbitrariness and hatred, of the demonization of differences. It is not just about the respect for the victims. If we do not understand why we should stumble just in that place, it means we do no longer know where they come from, at what price they were obtained and how much the freedom we have and the democracy in which we live are worth. The police’s task is to identify the criminal hands. It is up to us, however, to see, to denounce and to stand out against the deterioration of  the political and cultural debate responsible to foment those hands’ arrogance. Eighty years after the promulgation of racist and fascist laws (1938), we cannot ignore the consequences that silence and indifference in front of words and actions of hatred, may produce”.
