Rome (NEV), May 3, 2020 – “A one-year moratorium for 2021 on all military purchases for new weapon systems. If it is perhaps not conceivable to stop the programs that have already been financed and decided with the Budget Law voted at the end of 2019, it is certainly possible to intervene on the next budget decisions of the State. What is being asked is therefore concretely feasible: to completely cancel the funds for new weapons allocated both at the Ministry of Defense and at the Ministry of Economic Development for a year.  Overall, it would be more than 6 billion euros saved, which could be immediately converted and invested for post COVID-19 school reorganization and for the purchase of medical equipment in order to increase beds, especially those for intensive care. A simple and in a certain sense also natural choice, with funds already foreseen and for which there would only be a change of destination from negative and not useful investment to fundamental investments for the future of Italy”.

This is what the Peace Network, the Sbilanciamoci Association and the Italian Disarmament Network, of which the Globalization and Environment Commission (GLAM) of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy (FCEI) are asking. These associations reached a joint position with the aim of recovering useful funds for the exit phase from the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and to start a real process of moving resources from military spending to more useful sectors for society.
